Education is a partnership of what happens in the classroom and what happens at home. Parents, caregivers, and whānau play an important role in supporting their child’s learning and development.
As part of our focus on lifting student achievement, this year we have introduced a new curriculum. This means we are currently changing from the old to the refreshed curriculum. This includes new teaching and assessment methods and content.
Schools are legally required to report at least twice a year (i.e. mid & end). At Hāwera Primary your child’s report is always live and available in 'real-time' on Hero. You can access this by selecting the ‘2025 Report’ on the dropdown menu or via the specific subject pages e.g. ‘Reading’.
Each time your child’s goals are altered throughout the year it automatically updates their report.
The report information is based on teacher observations, classroom tasks and a range of other assessments (e.g. tests). Please refer to the summary sheet below for further clarification of the various components.
You may see a change in your child’s achievement level compared to previous years which may be a result of changes in the curriculum expectations for your child’s year level. This does not yet summarise the progress they are making which we will incorporate into our end of year reporting.
If you have any concerns or questions about your child’s achievement, we strongly encourage you to book a time to meet with their teacher, in the first instance, and/or the principal.
In addition:
Head Start Hui are held at the beginning of the year to establish aspirations, smooth transitions and co-construct goals.
Home & School Partnership Hui are held mid-year with a focus on current progress and achievement.
Information for how you can book a time for these hui are posted on Hero near to the time. We look forward to seeing all our families at these crucial events.
The Ministry of Education has launched a new and informative webspace for parents and whānau to help you to support your children’s learning at home and the relationship between families and school.
The Parent Portal is an online resource designed to support families to play their part in their child’s learning.
This new webspace is designed to make it easier for parents, caregivers, and whānau to access clear and up-to-date information on the school curriculum, assessment practices, and ways they can complement their child’s learning.
